geezus, this frickin' storm is a big, fat, turgid blob. it was sposed to already be here by now, but it hasn't even crossed the shore yet at SPI and brownsville.
in case you care, i live on the border of edinburg-mcallen, which is one county over, but clearly in the line of action. it's just been raining some, but nothing major yet. we'll proly get more action later today. whee.
local tv reporters, unfortunately, are woefully unprepared for live reports from the field. some of them are dressed in their hideous yellow wal-mart plastic slickers and matching rain pants, getting blown around.
and some of them are just absolutely freaked out and unable to do live stand-ups, or blow-aways, without stupid references to the churning waves and palm trees blowing.
(in sofla, local tv used wobbling street signs as a barometer of el viento)
the best part is watching the poor cameramen wiping of the lens in vain. i don't think i've ever seen that before.
anyway, just thought i'd update a bit as there is little else to do....
**edit** oh, and the headline is a play on words..anchors aweigh....**

I stayed indoors all day today waiting for some dude to come to my sister's hosue and fix the leak in her ceiling. I pretty much just watched TV, slept, ate, and did some crocheting.
Tonight/Tomorrow I get to stay indoors all day and watch the weather channel and crochet. Maybe i'll practice something. Probably not.
fucking Hurricane. Luckily it's only a 1, but that means lots of rain and random flooding all day. Hopefully the mall is closed so i don't have to go to work. Either way, i'm not going to work.
I really hope everything is ok though, my grandpa refuses to leave his house because he doesn't want to leave his dog behind and It's apparently too late to find a shelter home for the dog.
So yes, Hurricane is coming, and I'm safe (like any of you remembered that I was from south texas lol). Update tomorrow after the storm.

so now, they're saying this damned storm is going to hit at the mouth of the rio grande.
that means people in brownsville and mission and along the river could be fucked.
this has some potentially katrina-like effects...so, you heard it here first.
but...maybe we'll get lucky.

the rio grande valley is in a hurricane zone, but we generally are missed everytime a hurricane threatens. this time, dolly is headed straight ahead for the rgv.
the uni officials are canceling classes tomorrow and thursday. holy cow. i expected one day, but two will be nice. of course, if i lose electricity and am flooded, it will be hell. but i'm hoping for the best.
this is the antithesis of my previous life. i would be working 18-20-hour shifts and have little time to ready my place. now, i have time and the luxury of not being out in the middle of it. at this point in my life, i like that. earlier in my life, i would have hated it....
just got back from filling sandbags up in the middle of town. it was sort of surreal, with all these families out there with shovels, putting sand in bags and lugging them off. somehow, i always pictured it like you show up at the place and they give you the bags. ha ha ha.
we didn't do this in florida, so this is a new one on me.
i guess the fun starts later tonight and through tomorrow.
i'll keep you posted.

oh, great. i just saw this story and things could get ugly for people living near the rio grande.
hopefully, i live far enough north of the river that we'll be unaffected.
i am so pissed that officials have put off reinforcing the levees. they have talked about this for years...and now it may bite them on the ass.
this could be bad....

saw "the dark knight" this afternoon. it was, as advertised, excellent.
thank god. after two outings to shitty films, i am so relieved to find something that lived up to its promise.
heath ledger was terrifying and menacing. i actually felt sad as i watched him, realizing this would be his final role. definitely worth seeing.
i was also heartened to see that christian bale will play john connor in "terminator 4."
and there was the preview for my most-anticipated film of the summer, tropic thunder.
as an aside, i used "tropic thunder" as a choice on my doc history final in the spring...mainly just a bogus answer for a question about a couple of vietnam films we watched. and, unfortunately, a few people fell into the trap. egad.

also watched disc two of season one of "mad men." ooooh, i understand the reason for all the kudos. very nice writing, acting and decor. despite all the cigarettes and whiskey, which seem to play a supporting role, it reminds me, visually, of my childhood....

So the past month has been pretty good and since today is AWESOME I decided to make a happy list post
-My pay check was great this time around. $300! yeah that's chump change for some of you workers out there, but for me that's fabulous. some of that is probably thanks to the 4th of July. My mom took about 70% of it though so...boo.
-I GOT MY LICENSE TODAY! I AM A LICENSED DRIVER! WOO! Now I can drive my car around and not have to depend on people so much anymore. I want to buy an mp3 adapter thing so i can listen to my Zune in the car. I might have to wait until the next paycheck though.
-Dee and Van came to visit me in McAllen! Eating out with them is where most of my first paycheck went, but it was totally worth it. They had a good time and had some good food. I really missed my female Denton friends, I have mostly guy friends here so getting some girl time in is always a plus.
-THE DARK KNIGHT WAS AMAZING! Heath Ledger was so brilliant, his acting gave me chills. I completely forgot that he was Heath Ledger several times because he just became the role so well. Some of the trailers looked really good, too, like THE WATCHMEN. And they used that really cool Smashing Pumpkins song in it so that was a treat (I think it was "The End is the Begining is the End").
-Peelander Blue is now gone from Peelander-Z ;_;, but he called me while i was on my break at work and told me he loved me and thanks for the doll <3! He also sent Andrew home with some gifts for me (a feather boa, his championship belt, and his snorkel *from when he crowd surfed*).
That's about it. Just thought i'd post alittle good news. I leave in less than a month back to denton, which is a real bummer. I haven't done too much studying/practicing, but i swore to myself I would get on that. Maybe tonight, but probably not because Jairo is leaving to Austin and that = party. Later!
